Lower section of the furnace after removal of the ash, tuyere opening is at the top of the image. The two black squares visible are small amounts of burned paper remaining from when the original fire was lit (likely protected by the charcoal). The black burn zone is set off by the white colouration around the tuyere and slight melting of the walls near the tuyere. These changes show the differing heat levels.
