Because the orginal pipe tuyere with its view port was locked in place by solidified slag, the new air tube lacked a port to make direct readings of the smelter interior. This was one method attempted to gather some idea what the interior temperature was. A piece of heavy mild steel wire (about 1/8 dia) was probed down to the level of the air blast.
