The real challenge in building the clay wall up after the turf is how uneven the turf is. What isn't obvious in this shot is that the North (top) wall of the smelter is tilted in and had to be removed and the sod cut back so the wall could be straightened. It will be interesting to see how both the clay and the sod reacts to the heat of the furnace . Will it be noticeable where the sod wasn't tight? This might indicate that the clay tube was built first and then sod and soil packed around it. Dirt on the edge of the clay has been an issue.
