Ragnarr working the bellows to heat the bead furnace. Spare charcoal waits in the background. The round furnace shape is one of the shapes documented at Ribe. The narrow chimney concentrates the heat allowing glass to be worked in the flame much as a modern lampworker does. Note that the bellows operator (and bead maker who sits on the opposite side) sit on the ground with their legs and feet in cut holes. This is a comfortable posture, but the holes are not reflected in the archaeology at Ribe, implying a different working style was used.
