Vikings Take Over Local Museum |

This
exhibit is very different from what people have seen at the Museum in
the past, and is just the first in a series of exciting new displays that
the Museum will present in the next year and a half, in anticipation of
the new Heritage Centre. |
This past weekend, the Vikings invaded Owen Sound and set up their
encampment, in order to help the Grey County Museum launch its new summer
exhibit, 'The Vikings: Master Mariners, Traders, Colonists and Artisans,'
on loan from the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature.
The seven Norse explorers, including baby 'Astrid', set up camp. They
quickly turned their attention to the concerns of everyday life, including
food preparation, weaving, coin-minting, smithing and dyeing. Curious
local visitors got a chance to see these ancient crafts in action, and
some even had the opportunity to try them themselves. To relax, one Norseman
challenged visitors to a game of 'hnefatafl' (King's Table), a much loved
Norse board game. |

"We love sharing the knowledge and creativity of the Norse with people
today, and showing them how a thousand year old way of life and ancient
tools actually have influenced Canadian history." remarked Vandy
Simpson, a veteran member of the Dark Ages Re-Creation Company.
DARC has brought the Viking era back to life at museums, fairs and historic
sites, including L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland, site of the only confirmed
Norse settlement in North America.
Stephanie McMullen, Heritage Programs Coordinator at the Museum, noted,
"This exhibit is very different from what people have seen at the Museum
in the past, and is just the first in a series of exciting new displays
that the Museum will present in the next year and a half, in anticipation
of the new Heritage Centre."
'The Vikings: Master Mariners, Traders, Colonists and Artisans' will be
on display until August 25, 2002, at the Grey County Museum. |
